Ecosystem Restoration Projects

MLC has delivered an array of ecosystem restoration projects of varying scale and scope. Here are a few examples of projects we're proud to have been part of.

Immediately after restoration
Rogers Creek Online Pond Mitigation
Client: Credit Valley Conservation 
​Summary
​Created a 115m natural channel bypass of an online pond in a tributary of the Credit River with Brook Trout habitat. Project involved modifying and maintaining the farm pond by installing a clay compacted berm and constructing a natural channel adjacent. 6 pools and 6 riffles were constructed.

Monora Creek Bank Restoration
Client: Town of Orangeville
​Summary
Re-aligned 35m of Monora Creek in a reach containing Brook Trout. Work included the installation of a vegetated boulder treatment and installation of 2 riffles and 1 pool. The site was also planted and seeded.

Blair Flats Wetland Restoration
Client: rare Charitable Research Reserve
​Summary
Expanded existing Grand River Floodplain wetlands in the Blair Flats property owned by rare Charitable Research Reserve. Wetland area was increased by roughly 6000m2. This work included the installation of roughly 1km of sediment fencing, excavation and regrading of roughly 4000m3 of earth and installation of 1700m2 of coir to stabilize the bank of the wetland.

Five and Five Redside Dace Creek Restoration Project
Client: Conservation Halton
​Summary
110m natural channel design installation in a highly sensitive stream reach with endangered Redside Dace present. Project was phased over 2 seasons and involved re-aligning the channel slightly, constructing 3 pools and 4 riffles, installing vegetated riverstone treatments and bioengineering.

Willoughby Creek Restoration
Client: Private Resident
Summary
​30m creek narrowing as well as creek bed and bank restoration to re-establish a meander in Willoughby Creek. Including vegetated riverstone treatment 2 riffle installations as well as a flow control riffle to maintain a high flow channel.

Sixteen Mile Drainage Feature Regrade and Riparian Planting
Client: Halton Region
Summary
Regraded a drainage feature of Sixteen Mile Creek, planted the riparian zone with native shrubs including Red Osier Dogwood and completed in channel plantings of Broadleaf Cattail.

Sixteen Mile Weir Removal and Bridge Installation
​Client: Conservation Halton
Summary
​​This project had 2 components with the first being the removal of a mill dam and installation of natural channel design to restore fish passage. The second component was the replacement of 2 undersized and non fish friendly culverts with a spanning timber bridge.
